Student Service

Student rooms are equipped with modular telephone jacks. Basic service is covered by student room fees. Students provide their own touch tone telephones. Telephone numbers are permanently assigned to particular rooms and do not move with students.

Direct Inward Dialing

All phones in the Williams system can be accessed directly. There is no need for any calls to go through the switchboard.

Calls Outside the System

Calling outside the system requires an authorization code that can be obtained at Facilities at 60 Latham Street.

Call Waiting/Conference/Voice Mail

Student phones have call waiting, three-party call, and voice mail features. If you do not wish to have call waiting, please notify ext. 3097. 

To activate call waiting

1. After hearing call waiting tone, push the flash or switch-hook – dial tone.
2. Dial *4 – current call on hold – waiting call is connected.
3. To toggle between two calls, repeat steps 1 and 2.
4. When finished with either call, do step 5 or 6.
5. Hang up and answer the held call when it re-rings.
6. Return to held call by repeating steps 1 and 2. Held call is reconnected (other caller can hang up at distant end).

To activate conference call

1. Press flash or switchhook – recall dial tone – current call on hold.
2. Dial third party.
3. When call has been answered, press flash or switchhook – three-party conference established.
4. If number dialed is busy or not answered, press flash or switchhook twice – call to third party dropped – original two-party call is reestablished.

Credit Card Calls

For all calling cards, dial 9 then follow the instructions on the back of your calling card. Our telephone system is set up so that you cannot call the operator for “time and charges,” or ask the operator for dialing assistance. Operator assisted calls not dialed properly will be subject to an audit.

Harassing Calls

Anonymous, threatening or harassing telephone calls are illegal and the college regards them as a serious offense. The college has equipment to track and identify calling stations.
